How much weed can you really grow from 4 plants?

Under 2020’s pandemic-induced lockdown, I did what many cannabis-loving Canadians did this spring: I planted some weed. Adults in most Canadian provinces are permitted to cultivate up to four recreational cannabis plants per household. And while cannabis can grow like, well, a weed… maximizing the yield from just four plants takes a certain amount of know-how.

Fast forward to October and Toronto is back under “lockdown” again and all I have to show for it is an ounce or so of homegrown bud.

It begs the question, how much weed can you really grow from just four plants?

For a real-life example, meet Jonathan Hirsh (a.k.a @Weedstagram416) who’s been documenting his quarantine-inspired homegrow on his (now devastatingly deleted) Instagram account.

From his four mature plants, he harvested ~20lbs of cannabis (wet weight). And while he’s devoting 17.58lbs to freezing for extraction, he’s drying the rest to smoke. He estimates that if he were to dry it all, his crop would yield nearly 8lbs of dry weed (that’s almost 2lbs per plant)!

For your 4 plants, what varieties (strains) did you grow this season?

This season I grew four cultivars; Banana Candy Creams, Guide Dawg, Cherry Dawg Punch, and Insane Ice Cream.

When did you plant those seeds?

Seeds hit the soil March 15.

Wait, don’t you germinate the seeds first?

I sprout them in the soil. I get a pot, or even a red solo cup, poke four to six holes in it, put in some soil, put my seeds in, then cover it with soil and water it. A lot of people use the paper towel method and all that but it’s a waste of time.

Can you tell us how you shaped your 4 plants to get so many colas?

There are many steps to keeping your four plants short, bushy, and giving them the opportunity to develop lots and lots of colas. The highest yielding and best quality flowers are always going to be near the top of that plant because it gets the most amount of sun and because the plant is also sending the most amount of food and energy to those top buds. So if you can trick your plant into thinking that all of the new growths are top buds, then they’re all going to be the best quality buds possible.

So how do you do it?

Stap 1:

Ik heb altijd het licht van drie tot vier centimeter afstand van mijn zaailing in de allervroegste stadia en omhoog centimeter per centimeter, centimeter voor centimeter, van dag tot dag, tot mijn uiterste best doen om die plant zo laag mogelijk.

De truc is naar je hand te zetten door het bladerdak van jouw kleine zaailing en als uw hand niet te warm na 60 seconden, je bent goed. Dit is de reden waarom ik het gebruik van een tl-lamp in de vroegste stadia want je kunt het ook super dicht bij de plant, zonder enige schade.

Stap 2:

De volgende stap is om iets te doen, genaamd topping die de actie van het snijden van de plant op de nieuwe groei op de hoofdstam. Wanneer je de top van de belangrijkste bud site, het gaat om het veroorzaken van al deze extra bud sites te verschijnen en hun eigen cola. U kunt nog steeds boven alle andere belangrijke bud sites en meer cola ' s en uw planten zullen gewoon blijven verdubbelen in grootte en breedte.

In plaats van de topping op de traditionele derde knooppunt ik graag doe de topping in het tweede knooppunt. Het houdt de zaailing ongelooflijk laag bij de grond en stelt me in staat om de volgende stap is de " low-stress training.

Stap 3:

Low-stress training is echt simpel, maar het kost veel tijd. Het was een geweldige techniek voor het in quarantaine plaatsen, want ik had al die tijd en dat gaf me veel van de hands-on tijd met mijn "Quarantaine Baby 's", zoals ik het noemde.

Ga naar uw plaatselijke fabriek slaan en de aankoop van rubber plant draad, het is super goedkoop, je kunt soms zelfs in de dollar winkel. Dan gaatjes langs de rand van de pot en het gebruik van de rubber draad, langzaam buig de takken naar beneden in een wagon wheel, zodat ze groeien horizontaal in plaats van verticaal.

Stap 4:

De laatste stap is het gebruik van iets als een topper net, een flatscreen netten gemaakt van nylon touw of soms hard plastic. U kunt de aankoop van dit groeien aanbod op te slaan.

Gebruik de 3×3-inch gaten in de topper van de netto om uw groei zo dat waar er vroeger zijtakken die uit uw hoofd stengels, is er nu gaat om colas.

Deze zijtakken zijn gaan groeien en worden misleid in het denken dat ze de top belangrijkste bud. Omdat ze steeds de volledige toegang tot zonlicht, ze krijgt de meeste hoeveelheid energie om te groeien, zodat ze een veel hars productie, THC, cannabinoïden zijn gaan bloeien, en dat u veel mooie sappige cola.

Hoeveel cola ben je uiteindelijk met per plant?

Ik heb ze niet geteld, maar er was tussen de 20 en 30 per plant, afhankelijk van de plant.

Wat doet uw set-up eruit? Speciale apparatuur?

Deze groei was volledig biologisch. Ik gebruikte producten van StepWell met inbegrip van super de bodem. Voor voedsel, gaf ik ze top-jurk en EM1, micro-organismen die helpen bij het afbreken van het voedsel in de bodem.

Pot-wise, begon ik ze in een red Solo cup-up van één tot twee, maximaal 10 liter potten, voor het afsnijden van de onderkant van een 15-liter plastic pot en stapelen die op de top van een 35-liter stof pot van de bodem.

Did you encounter any issues like mold or pests and how did you deal with them?

Oh ya, this summer has been terrible for growers. I encountered powdery mildew which I had to deal with by spraying my plants with apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and water, plus a sulfur spray called Safer’s Defender.

And then there were all sorts of crazy pests this summer. Just like any outdoor grow, nature itself takes care of that, and when it doesn’t, I call a company called Koppert. Even for home growers, they have the ability to send you predatory bugs like nematodes and ladybugs, plus yellow sticky cards. So, I battled the crap out of the bug population.
